SMART Goals

A SMART Goal is a specific, measurable, achievable, relative, time-bound goal. By using SMART goals you can create clear and actionable objectives that will help you reach your desired outcomes.

Specific

Your goal should be clear, well-defined, and clearly understood. Define what you want to accomplish and the actions you will take.

“I want to lose weight” is more specific than “I want to be healthier”.

Measurable

Your goal should have a clear metric so you can track your progress.

“I want to run a marathon” is measurable but “I want to improve my running” isn’t.

Achievable

Your goal should be realistic and attainable with your resources and ability. Setting lofty goals could be good but if you can’t accomplish them you could lose motivation and momentum. If a goal seems too large you could break it down into multiple smaller goals.

“I want to learn how to play the guitar in a month” could be attainable for someone with the time and motivation but it may not be for others.

Relevant

Your goal should align with your priorities as well as those of your team and organization and be something you truly want to do. To help see alignment you could list the key benefits of accomplishing the goal.

“I want to start my own business” might be relevant if that has been something you’ve wanted to do.

Time-bound

You should set a deadline or time frame for completing your goal or evaluating your success.

“I want to finish this project by the end of the month.”

Examples

Professional Goal: “I’m going to increase sales”

Personal Goal: “I’m going to get in shape.”
